Construction of Dub Train Studio Mark II photo gallery - updated weekly.

Speaker Stands
Silica Sand
Mixer Table
Panel Frame
| 1))) Several non-construction projects are necessary to get things up and running. Speaker stands, a mixer table and some acoustic panels are only the first things to take care of! | |||
Dacron Batting
Rigid Fiberglass
Green Burlap
Absorption Panel
| 2))) With some careful materials research and a couple of industrial suppliers nearby, the absorption panels came together quite smoothly! They're hella absorptive, too. | |||
Hanging Panels
Four More
Suspended Angle
Mini Storage
| 3))) I used some plant brackets to hang the green panels about 4" away from the wall, then made 4 more panels for the ceiling. They are suspended at an angle to trap bass build-up in the corners of the room. The shelves get a little more organized, too. | |||
Control Room
Dub Box
Lobby Chair
Porch Lights
| 4))) The silk-screen slipcover fits over the 4'x6' office panel and makes a nice backdrop for the control room's editing zone. The Dub Box is wired in, and a couple of very nice chairs make their way into the studio, too. I spent a rare dry afternoon stringing up the holiday lights under the "smoking section". | |||
Skinny Panels
Framed Up
Da Clamps!
Drywall Anchors
| 5))) One more set of panels is needed to trap the corners of the rooms. I'm using rigid fiberglass panels again but cutting them in half the long way, so I end up with several 1'x4' panels. These will hang vertically from the ceiling in every corner and should control the last of the standing wave problems. | |||
Corner Panels
Teensy Panel
Control Panels
Tighter Setup
| 6))) Another afternoon spent cutting and installing polyester batting, rigid fiberglass and burlap fabric fronts give me 8 smaller traps to place. I'll use the same spiral fasteners to hang them from the ceiling again, then reset the room. | |||
Canted Rip
Groovy Pine
Corner Miter
Pressing Issue
| 7))) After several brainstorming sessions and a careful listen to the room, I decided on a plan for my diffusion panels. Unlike the bass traps, which tame low and mid-range frequencies via absorption, diffusion panels scatter mid- and hi-range sounds in multiple directions to avoid harsh "slappy" reflections. | |||
Long Panel
Wide Panel
Poly Stain
Gobo Chop
| 8))) Finally all the panels are framed, the canted wood is glued into place and I've applied a poly/stain product to color and seal the wood. Next I have to figure out how to mount them on the studio walls. If only I could remember where the studs are... | |||
The construction phase is finally complete, exactly one year later.
The acoustic treatment is mostly done (but always ongoing),
