So, you want to buy a Steel Drum, huh? A good instrument will last you 10 years at least (though it may need some retuning from time to time), and can cost upwards of a thousand dollars! The Toucans have collected a source list for those interested in getting their own pan.
The Toucans play exclusively Boots pans. Created by Ex-Invader Otto "Boots" Faustin, a Trinidadian pan-maker and calypsonian, our pans have a rich, full sound that may not be as technically perfect as some other pans, but is stronger and more distinctive than any other pans we've heard. Our Boots pans have been going strong for over 10 years, now, and they provide the remarkable Toucans sound on all of our recordings!
Unfortunately, Boots isn't set up for orders these days. He's busy crafting pans in Vancouver, BC for a few bands in that area. Luckily, there are a few other sources for mail-order steel drums that the Toucans have found. If you know of any others, please let us know and we'll include them here!

Ellie Mannette

Nobody has been making pans longer than Ellie Manette, who was there when the first drums were presented at Trinidad's Carnival in 1938, and who is responsible for the appearance and sound of today's modern steel pan. Not to diminish the great contributions of other panmakers, but Ellie's hand is all over the instrument as it exists today. There's a long, long wait for his drums, but boy, is it worth it! |

Dennis & Sharon Martin
Dennis apprenticed with Ellie Mannette, developed the revolutionary pneumatic air system for sinking pans, and makes and tunes pans for players all over the Northwest. Sharon Martin heads the band and takes care of the business side of things. Together, they make the dynamic duo of Rhythmical Steel! |
In the Pacific Northwest, pan players may find Dennis Martin to be their most convenient pan builder and tuner. He and his steel drumming family ("Rhythmical Steel") live in La Center, WA, just north of the Oregon border, and make all sorts of great drums, and at reasonable prices, too.
School programs may also be interested in the Martin's Orff Pans, a smaller student-sized instrument tuned to the Orff scale for music instruction. For more information, check out the Martin's Rhythmical Steel Website, with pan info, prices, and lots more information about their musical family. |
| Carl Chase has been building quality pans in Maine for many years now. His own band "Atlantic Clarion Steel Band" has produced 5 CD's. For more information about his pans, please contact Carl directly. | |
